The European Molecular Biology Network (EMBnet) was constituted in 1988 with the purpose of creating an infrastructure for molecular biology-based bioinformatics in Europe. Analogous EMBnet Austria is a national facility to support computer aided research in biosciences.
The Vienna Biocenter (VBC) is internationaly recognised as the National EMBnet node Austria since 1993. Since summer 2005 EMBnet Austria is part of the Center of Integrative Bioinformatics (CIBIV) and the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL).
During the years 1993-2005 EMBnet Austria was maintained by the Biocomputing Department of the Vienna University Computer Center (VUCC).
A successful period ended in August 2008. Austria is not member of EMBnet any more. To ensure ongoing support for users and in teaching, the technical service will go on until end of February 2009. In the next semester the server will be shut down
